Changing jobs is a big decision and you want to make sure there are no surprises. Granted you may not be able to uncover every detail about your new employer during the interview process but we suggest that you gather the following details so you can make an informed decision.

  1. Where are they in the search process?
  2. Why is the position open? (Expansion vs. Replacement)
  3. How long has the position been open?
  4. What steps have they taken so far to fill the position?
  5. What is their deadline for filling the position?
  6. What are the essential background requirements and knockout factors for the ideal candidate?
  7. What's the official title?
  8. How does the position fit into the company's overall strategic plan?
  9. What are the long-term opportunities for someone that is successful in the position?
  10. What business problem are you trying to solve with this position?
  11. How will you be measured and managed?
  12. Do you have to report to the office everyday or can you work from a virtual/home office?
  13. How much travel is anticipated (day trips vs over night)?
  14. Where did their best sales/marketing staff come from?
  15. What makes them successful?
  16. Who are their partners?
  17. What's the base comp?
  18. What is the realistic 1st year income potential?
  19. What does the top producer in a similar position earn?
  20. Specifically, how does the compensation plan work?
  21. Historically, how frequently has the comp plan been modified?
  22. Is there a cap on your potential earnings?
  23. Is equity/options available and what is the strike price /vesting schedule?
  24. Get a copy of the benefit plan.

In addition to this investigate more than just the company's website. Look at their competitors, customers, search the web and talk to people that may know more about the company.
